An atmospheric gouache depicting the statue of Sir Walter Scott at Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh at night. Circa. late 19th/early 20th century. Unsigned. By repute the work is attributed to Scottish artist Katharine Cameron R.S.W, R.E (1874-1965). Whilst Katharine Cameron is more widely known for her fae and flowers, she has been known to sketch Edinburgh landmarks such Edinburgh Castle and Canongate.

The scene is expertly depicted with the light radiating from the windows and gas lamp in such a way that the viewer gets the clear impression that it is raining. The monument looms hazily to the centre surrounded by shadows and the night sky. Housed in a later gilt frame.

An attractive work.
