A fine 5-volume set of Robert Smith Surtrees' sporting novels, to include:
- 'Mr Romford's Hounds';
- 'Plain or Ringlets';
- 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour';
- 'Hawbuck Grange' and
- 'Ask Mamma'.
Each volume boasts a fine Bayntun (of Bath) binding, each three-quarter bound in red leather with five raised bands to the spine. The spine panels depict fine gilt tooled foxes, horses, dogs and horseshoes, with gilt stamped title and author to the second and fourth panels. Top page edge gilt. Some light signs of wear commensurate with age and some fading in places to the cloth but generally the exterior is in a very good condition.
Marbled endpapers. Binder's stamp to top of flyleaf. Some browning and spotting to preliminary but generally the volumes remain in a very good condition internally, free from inscription.
Synopsis
Surtees' was arguably a match for Dickens in the field of social observation, whilst surpassing him as an observer of the natural world: with warmth and humour Surtees captured an era and a way of life that reached its zenith during Queen Victoria's reign.
