An atmospheric late 18th century oil on canvas of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire, Wales. Circle of Richard Wilson (Welsh, 1714-1782).
Three conversing figures sit the fore, with fishermen and sailboats upon the River Wye with Tintern Abbey and its magnificent landscape behind, all under a golden hour sky.
There is some slack to the canvas and a light stretcher crease to the left side. The canvas edge sits ever so slightly under the top of the frame (please see photographs). The work is housed in a period gilt frame which has multiple losses but has been re-gilded at some point in its history so displays well nonetheless.
A striking work.
